This is a Canopy Express truck. In the days before supermarkets were common, farmers would load their produce into the backs of these trucks, drive into town, and sell their produce from the back of the truck.

Although they were somewhat of a niche market vehicle, several companies made them since it wasn’t very difficult to adapt the design of a panel van to make a Canopy Express truck.

Once supermarkets started popping up in the early ‘50s, though, Canopy Express trucks started disappearing, and nowadays they’re quite rare. Which is too bad, since I think these old trucks are quite lovely and full of character.

Also, because of the time zone I’m in, I have to make the publish time two hours later than it actually is where I am in order for it to match up with my time zone. Kinja usually does this automatically. Why do I bring this up? B ecause Kinja just set the article to publish at 13:46 . Oh, Kinja...

Lovely is the perfect word for it. It just brings to mind romantic scenes of hardworking farmers and their families loading the new family truck to go to market on a Saturday morning. You see them at the small town market in a colorful sea of other local produce growers, selling the fruits and veggies to customers - some equally red-cheeked and jean-wearing farmers as they are, others cityslickers in clean and neatly folded suits and shirts, tilting their hats to extend greetings. They pack up the Canopy express at the end of the day. Some fruits remain unsold, but it’s ok, they will be perfect for the pie on Sunday.

I discovered them when I was browsing Barn Finds.com and saw one that was in need of major restoration. The post said that it might be worth the cost of restoration, since it’s such an unusual, interesting, and rare vehicle (the post said that only something like 2,000 of that particular truck were ever made) . After that I had to know more about them, and now I think they’re super cool :)

There are a couple in my area. There is a lovely olive green one that I’ve seen at Lime Rock and around that acts a food vendor.
